Short documentary completed during the 2024 Summer School “Documentary and Multimodal Ethnographic Approaches”, organized by the Netherlands Institute at Athens.
We meet Captain Tavli, who has earned his nickname at the local kafenio, a traditional Greek coffee house.
This anthropological documentary explores the kafenio as a cornerstone of Greek social life for older retired men, who gather to drink strong coffee and play Tavli (Greek Backgammon).
It also explores the personal memories of Captain Tavli, as he connects – over the course of the documentary – with his grandson Romanos, who also interviews him.
