Hidden Family Member – Photo Series

Cancer is common in my mother’s side of the family.

Because certain genetic mutations that can cause cancer occur in some family members,
they have to live with an invisible – and transmissible – sword of Damocles
hanging over their heads.
The presence of the disease is always noticeable.
In our homes, where urns and altars stand.
In our medical records.
And in our lifestyle.
We collect symbolic newspaper clippings or wear jewelry containing ashes.
We fight a lifelong battle against fate; sometimes one in which the loss is already predetermined.

This photo series shows the “relationship” that my family has with the disease.
What role does this hidden family member play in our lives?
How do we deal with the loss of loved ones to cancer and with the real chance of getting sick ourselves?
The stories vary: from smiling at life
with bright red lips after surviving breast cancer,
to painting your own coffin.
